The Austrian Season
The gallery at the Fondazone Studio Maragoni in Florence, has show-cased different international focal points in its exhibition program in presenting Spanish, German and British photography. This year, FLUSS was invited to compile an Austrian Season - a representative selection of current Austrian photo and video art. In the first part, the Gallery present under the title "Reflections on the media" pieces of art that question, reflect, expand and re-read the medium: five photo artists, in the search for the readability of the medium, complemented by a video program, talks and a workshop. The season will continue in 2013 with part two: body work.

The evening looks at a range of video functions; from a practical tool for documenting and process development into the art piece itself as an instrument – serving an aesthetic or thematic discussion. And the video camera; from a technical provider of image to a participant – a character in the performance.
Live performance by the Dutch performance artist and documentary film maker Jeanette Groenendaal. The performance follows her last creative documentary REFORMATION in which she questions her past in a tiny village along the fertile river delta in the Netherlands. http://www.g-netwerk.nl/

A PROJECT OF REGIONALE 12 and LAMBEART – 29. Künstlerbegegnung Benediktiner Stift St. Lambrecht
Sabine Maier, born in the project region of Regionale XII and travelled all around the world for artistic projects, is doing door-to-door surveys in St. Lambrecht/Austria and examines the question, why people can feel at home or foreign.
In front of empty buildings in the town she installs interactive banks. By sitting down, the bank starts telling individual life stories from former inhabitants near by the empty houses with its individual history.
In the former "fish house" of the monastery St.Lambrecht Sabine Maier creates a visual and acoustic installation.
A story about a real bird at the "Auerling Lake" which has lost its way and because of local reasons he could not take off anymore.
A statement about being a stranger in a familiar world.

A FLUSS signature quality is their intensive artistic exchange, actively cultivated since 1990, with our neighboring countries in the East. The recent series “Nachbar[i]n” (wordplay on both the plural and the feminine form of the word “neighbor”), which was stimulated by the geographical proximity to former communist countries, has brought FLUSS members into lively and fruitful contact with their inhabitants. This has inspired a wide range of works. For the western part of Europe, we are the ones from the East. There, not much is known about the close cultural (and sometimes familial) relations that connect us Eastern Austrians with the East. For the exhibition in Innsbruck’s FotoforumWest, eleven FLUSS-artists will demonstrate these relations. Three artists from Slovakia, Hungary and Poland – FLUSS collaborators within the “Nachbar[i]n” series and/or within the European Commission funded project “Backlight” – will complete the view from the other side.
Clair de Lune

Clair de Lune ist eine Reflektion über Liszts mannigfaltige doch unerfüllte Beziehungen zu Frauen. Vier aus einem Stück gefaltete Papierkleider symbolisieren die vier wichtigsten Leidenschaften des Franz Liszt. Eines davon dreht sich im Tanz zu den Klängen von Clair de Lune, ausgelöst durch eine Annäherung des Betrachters. Die Korrespondenz zwischen Liszt und seinen Frauen erscheint geisterhaft an den Wänden.
Das Papier weist einerseits auf die Niederschrift der Kompositionen, in die Franz Liszt seine Gefühle in Noten ausgedrückt hat, hin, andererseits auf die Vergänglichkeit und Fragilität von Zuneigung; die Faltung auf das Reglement, das der Liebe oft entgegensteht: gesellschaftliche Konvention, Religion und dem Streben nach Anerkennung.
My work Clair de Lune is a reflection on Liszt´s many, but ultimately failed, relationship with women. The installation shows four folded paper dresses, all made out of one piece of paper, symbolizing the four women that were Liszt´s greatest passions. When the observer approaches, one of the dresses starts to move, "dancing" to the music of Clair de Lune. At the same time, excerpts of Liszt`s correspondence with this women appear on the surrounding walls, like eerie messages from ghosts of the past.
There are two reasons why I used paper as a material in my work: on the one hand, it alludes to the sheets of paper Liszt used to write down his compositions, expressing his feelings through music; on the other hand, paper reminds us how fleeting and fragile affection can be. The folding technique I used hints at the rules and restriction that often stand in the way of love: social conventions, religion, and the need to be accepted and recognized by society.

Eröffnet wird die Ausstellung durch Constanze Krehl (DE), Schirmherrin und Mitglied des Europäischen Parlaments und Christa Prets (AT), Präsidentin des eu-art-network.
Die Laudatio hält Wolfgang Horwath (AT), Bildender Künstler und Kurator der Ausstellung. Präsentiert wird eine repräsentative und spannende Auswahl von Werken, die in den letzten zehn Jahren innerhalb von elf Kunstsymposion entstanden sind. Innerhalb der Ausstellung wird es eine Audio-/Videoplattform mit einer repräsentativen Auswahl von Mitschnitten aus den Konzerten der vergangenen zehn Jahre geben.

Die Ausstellung Leere Räume / Empty Spaces umkreist die Phänomene des Verdrängens und Vergessens, die Anwesenheit im Abwesenden, sowie den Zustand der Leere als (Ausgangs-)Ort von Narrativen.
Um zwei Videoinstallationen gruppiert sich eine Reihe von Foto- und Mixed Media-Arbeiten, deren zentrales Motiv leere Räume sind. Das Augenfällige an den Videoarbeiten ist, dass sie mit statischer Kamera räumliche Situationen filmen, in denen scheinbar nichts passiert. Es könnten fotografische Einstellungen sein, wäre da nicht die zentrale Bedeutung der Tonebene, die die eigentliche(n) Geschichte(n) erzählt.
In den Arbeiten der Ausstellung geht es um das Verborgene und Verdrängte, das gerade durch seine Abwesenheit umso präsenter wird, als wenn es gezeigt würde: sei es Historisches – Enteignung und Vertreibung von Juden durch die Nazis (Kaufhaus Dichter von Eva Brunner-Szabo), Zeitgeschichtliches – die immer noch diskriminierende Behandlung von schwarzen Hausangestellten in Südafrika (The Lenox von Machfeld), Soziales – die heimliche Bewohnung verlassener Industrieanlagen durch Obdachlose oder Ilegale (Hotel Clandestine von Alessandro Mencarelli, Matters of Fact von Sharp) oder unausweichliches Persönliches – den Tod (The Landscapes Behind von Angela Svoronou).
