The leaves have fallen from the trees and darkness is upon us.
On 28th of october HORROR HOUSE will be present shortfilms
at the HUMlab / Umeå Universitet, Sweden.
Screening list:
Scott Svatos will be showing a sneak preview of STABBIN CABIN, a short film he´s created --- and edited right here in HUMlab!
The film is a horros / comedy (more comedy than horror) about a man who escapes the zombie apocalypse for his mountain cabin only to have his ex girlfriends returns as zombies to devour him.
Michael Mastrototaro [MACHFELD], visiting artist from vienna, will show 3 shorts:
GNU FOR ZOO - A filmic exploration of a 16mm black and white film, found 2008 in a trashcan in Los Angeles.
BANSKA - The soundlessly barking dog at the start cannot drive us away. Our gaze is directed into an open landscape and towards farm animals. Both menacing and graceful, erratic movement is put on the stage.
Gestures of the familiar amid the grass landscape rather heighten the feeling of apprehension. The strangeness of the interruptions, of the arrhythmic, strips the film of its surface layer of illusion. [...] The merry-go-round of inescapable sequence, both beautiful and horrible, starts anew with unchanged intensity, and no release comes. (thomas ballhausen)

At the brink of MACHFELD - original title M1+1 [MACHFELD1+1] – is the sience-fiction doppelganger project by Jack Hauser, Sabina Holzer, Sabine Maier, Michael Mastrototaro and living musicbox Anton Tichawa, for the future.
Godard´s One Plus One, the 35mm black and white movie La Jetée by Chris Marker (inspired by Alfred Hitchcock´s film classic Vertigo) are just a few of the many materials that make this physical and mental art space M1+1, this accessible journal.

For a long time, the moving image was a media of documentation only.
This was caused by the time delay between filming and broadcasting, a lack
of technological possibilities. The development of live broadcasting has
however created a new situation. Today, it is possible to witness an event
at the same moment as it happens.
In the interactive installation IVI, the medium video was extended with the
support of image recognition. The complex interaction between the media
and the human body created a platform of experience. The recipient was a
visual part of the installation and an instant instrument of interaction, hence:
Collective as well as individual influence became possible.
The substrate of the emotional level is the visual representation of viruses.
Playing with the projected picture activates the behavior of biological patterns.
The familiar instrument of one´s own body becomes a test-tube for visual
perception.

Die erste Art, das Gesetz zu stürzen, ist ironisch, und die Ironie erscheint hier als eine Kunst der Prinzipien, als eine Kunst, zu den Grundsätzen
hinaufzusteigen und sie zu Fall zu bringen. Die zweite Art besteht im Humor, das heißt in einer Kunst der Folgen und Abstiege, der Schwebe
und des Falls.« – Gilles Deleuze, Differenz und Wiederholung
Die Gruppenausstellung Bricolage Deluxe versammelt performative Filme, Videoarbeiten und Videoinstallationen von fünf Künstlerinnen.
Die vier Positionen oszillieren in ihrem Umgang mit Ironie zwischen spielerischer Subversion und subtilem Humor, und verweisen auf die
Kontingenz starr konstruierter Kategorien. Mit Hilfe von Ironie lassen sich dichotomische Kategorien subvertieren, weist doch die
Wissenschaftshistorikerin Donna Haraway Ironie als antiontologisch, als widersprüchlich aus. Widersprüche lassen sich nicht in ein größeres
Ganzes auflösen; gerade durch diese Spannung, Unvereinbares vereinen zu wollen, entfaltet sich Humor und auch ein spielerisches
Agieren. Ironie versteht Haraway aber ebenso als rhetorische Strategie und auch als politische Methode. Ironie in der Kunst kann
Sinnkonstruktionen spielerisch zitieren und in weiterer Folge aushöhlen, indem KünstlerInnen auf die Kontingenz und damit die Instabilität
von Ordnungssystemen verweisen. Kategorien werden damit nicht reproduziert, sondern kritisch verschoben und geraten in ihrem
Absolutheitsanspruch ins Wanken. Im Bewusstsein der Kontingenz konstituiert sich der eigene Standpunkt damit nur mehr als relativ.

the mystery box (der Haufen) erfindet eine Fülle von Bildern und Geschichten, die sich in Sprache, Geräuschen und Bewegungen mitteilen.
In Milli Bitterlis Performance geht ihr tanzender Körper immer neue Verbindungen mit den verschiedensten Erzählungen ein:
Der einsame Besucher des Mondes räsoniert über den leeren Raum, verwandelt sich in eine kleine Wolke, verschwindet, erscheint in einem
neuen Kleid und vollführt einen expressiven Tanz; der gedopte Marathonläufer lässt sich nach Tausenden von Metern entspannt und
als Frau auf einem Bett nieder – in größter und blinder Liebe, schwärmend von einem abwesenden Mann.
Es ist der Theaterraum eines Magiers, der jede Chronologie von Ereignissen möglich macht, und es ist der imaginierende Körper einer
tanzenden Erzählerin, der jede Behausung zulässt. Die Performerin bietet keine dauerhafte Orientierung an, sie ignoriert vertraute
Erzählstrukturen und gewöhnliche Hierarchien: Es ist ein „Haufen”, die Akkumulation von Fantastischem und Alltäglichem, von dem,
was man erlebt, was man liest, was man weiß und fantasiert.
the mystery box (der Haufen) invents a richness of images and stories communicated in the form of speech, noise and movement.
In Milli Bitterli’s performance, her dancing body again and again enters new connections with the different stories:
The lonely visitor on the moon philosophises about the empty space, transforms into a little cloud, disappears, reappears
in new clothing and performs an expressive dance. It is the theatre space of a magician that makes every chronology
of events possible, and it is the imagining body of a dancing storyteller that allows for every form of habitation.
The performer does not provide constant orientation. She ignores familiar narrative structures and ordinary hierarchies:
it is a “Haufen (pile)”, an accumulation of the fantastical and the everyday, of everything one has experienced, read about,
knows or fantasises about.
