X-COM

Sound composition and installation, 2007

X-com is a sound mapping of Johannesburg. It was developed by MACHFELD during their stay in South Afrca 2007. Together with students of the Cityvarsity and of the University of Wittwatersrand Johannesburg, the artists explored the multicultural identification of the city.

Is it necessary to have knowledge about „the foreigner“ in a cross continental communication process? The approach was to investigate how far sounds are subject to cultural conditions. MACHFELD applied old, analogue recording devices as well as new, digital ones in order to develop a cross-continental space of communication for this piece.

The images show the installation view at the Hong Kong Arts Center, during the exhibiton Cities of desire 2009

X-Com`s art radio version was broadcasted on 13 January 2008 on Austrian public radio Ö1.
