border-control: duty free fiction

Bratislava and Vienna are two neighbouring cities linked by a shared and a dividing history.
Based on these specific historical and contemporary relations, in May and in October 2004 a research project was take place with artists from both cities.
Whereas Bratislava is marked by its actual existence as a border city, and thus actual borders are present – and will also remain in the city and its architecture and biographies after those borders come down in May 2004 – the borders of Vienna and its people are much less on the surface. The drawing of boundaries, demarcation, is reflected in the representation of power in the architecture of the city, in politics and in people’s heads. Similar to the younger generations in Bratislava, many people in Vienna occupy themselves with the subject of the border rather as imagination, projection, fiction.
